Political Education should be required reading for people who are working on ESEA reauthorization or the adoption and implementation of the common core standards.
It would be a fun assignment. I enjoyed the focus on the underlying values of people making education policy, the power of story-telling in shaping policy, and the examples of how /5(3).
It defines political literacy as “a set of abilities necessary for citizens to participate in a society's government.” Yet in everyday reality, participation in government is confined to a tiny minority in Western democracies. Even voting in elections attracts barely half of the eligible population in most nations, and marking a ballot.
This means that political literacy must focus more on developing political ideas than promoting knowledge of political institutions. The latter is only necessary once an interest in politics itself has been established.
What ideas count as political. Any issue is political if it is in the public domain and a matter of public policy of any kind.
